Graduated from the Prometheus school of running away from things. Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for the upcoming World War I epic 1917. This is the latest from Sam Mendes ( Skyfall, American Beauty) and the filmmaker has truly outdone himself this time. Not only is he taking on some harrowing subject matter with a stacked cast, but he's decided to make it appear as though all of these events will unfold in a single, continuous shot that lasts for two hours. Safe to say, this could prove to be unlike anything we've ever seen. The trailer debuted during the movie's panel at New York Comic-Con and was promptly released online after. The footage, though not presented as a single shot, is excruciatingly tense and undeniably grand in scope. We get a strong sense of the story at play, which sees two soldiers being handed a very important mission that could save the lives of hundreds of men. During the panel, Sam Mendes had this to say about the story. "The movie's set in two hours of one day in the spring of 1917. The Germans, this is obviously true, retreated to the Hindenburg line, and for a few hours, the British had no idea where they'd gone. It's across this landscape that the two young men are sent to preserve the lives of 1, 600 men who are to be sent to attack the Hindenberg line. The movie takes place in just two hours and in one unbroken shot. The cast includes George MacKay ( Captain Fantastic) and Dean-Charles Chapman ( Game of Thrones) who are the soldiers tasked with carrying out the mission at the heart of the movie. The rest of the ensemble includes Colin Firth ( The King's Speech) Benedict Cumberbatch ( Avengers: Endgame) Richard Madden ( Rocketman) Andrew Scott ( Fleabag) Daniel Mays ( Line of Duty) Adrian Scarborough ( Blunt Talk) Jamie Parker ( Valkyrie) Nabhaan Rizwan ( Informer) and Claire Duburcq in her feature debut. The screenplay was co-written by Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns. To add to the prestige, cinematographer Roger Deakins shot 1917. The Oscar-winner may not be a name recognized by casual moviegoers, but his work, which includes classics like The Shawshank Redemption and No Country For Old Men, speaks for itself. Deakins spoke at the NYCC panel a bit about the notion of making this movie seem like one, continuous shot. "I don't think he told me that. I think I got the script and it was on the front page: This is conceived as one continuous shot. And I went, really. When I first read it, I thought, is it a gimmick? But it's not, it's integral to the experience. WWII movies have been a staple in Hollywood for years, but WWI hasn't been covered quite as much. That alone could make this stand out, but it looks like plenty is going on here to make this worth putting on your radar. 1917 hits theaters in limited release on December 25, with an expansion set for January 10, 2020. Topics: NYCC.

The film stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, with Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch in supporting roles. It is based in part on an account told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather, Alfred Mendes, 6] and chronicles the story of two young British soldiers during World War I who are tasked with delivering a message calling off an attack doomed to fail soon after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich in 1917. This message is especially important to one of the young soldiers as his brother is taking part in the pending attack. The project was officially announced in June 2018, with MacKay and Chapman signing on in October and the rest of the cast the following March. Filming took place from April to June 2019 in England and Scotland, with cinematographer Roger Deakins and editor Lee Smith using long takes to have the entire film appear as one continuous shot. 1917 premiered in the UK on 4 December 2019 and was theatrically released in the United States on 25 December 2019 by Universal Pictures, and in the United Kingdom on 10 January 2020 by eOne. The film received praise for Mendes's direction, the performances, cinematography, musical score, editing, sound effects, and realism. Among its various accolades, the film received ten nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. The film won Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, and it has received nine nominations at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards. It also won the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture. Plot [ edit] On 6 April 1917, aerial reconnaissance has observed that the German army, which has pulled back from a sector of the Western Front in northern France, is not in retreat but has made a tactical withdrawal to the new Hindenburg Line, where they are waiting to overwhelm the British with artillery. In the British trenches, with field telephone lines cut, two young British soldiers, Lance Corporals Will Schofield and Tom Blake, are ordered by General Erinmore to carry a message to Colonel Mackenzie of the Second Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, calling off a scheduled attack that would jeopardise the lives of 1, 600 men, including Blake's brother Lieutenant Joseph Blake. Schofield and Blake cross no man's land to reach the abandoned German trenches. In an underground barracks, they discover a booby-trap tripwire. This is triggered by a rat, and the explosion almost kills Schofield, but Blake saves him, and the two escape. They arrive at an abandoned farmhouse, where they witness a German plane being shot down in flames. Schofield and Blake drag the injured pilot from the plane. Schofield proposes a mercy kill, but Blake insists they help him. The pilot stabs Blake and is shot dead by Schofield. Schofield comforts Blake as he dies, promising to complete the mission and to write to Blake's mother. Schofield is then picked up by a passing British unit. A destroyed canal bridge near the bombed village of Écoust-Saint-Mein prevents the British lorries from crossing. Schofield chooses to cross alone, and comes under fire from a German sniper. He tracks down and kills the sniper, only to be knocked out by a ricocheting bullet. He regains consciousness and proceeds. Under fire, Schofield stumbles into the hiding place of a French woman with an infant. She treats his wounds and he sings the infant a song, giving the woman his canned food and milk from the farm. Continuing, Schofield is shot at as flares light up the night sky. He meets more German soldiers, strangling one and pushing past another who is inebriated. Other soldiers give chase, but he escapes by jumping into a river. He is swept over a waterfall before reaching the riverbank in the morning. In the forest, he finds D Company of the 2nd Devons, which is in the last wave of the attack. As the company starts to move through the trenches to the front, Schofield tries to reach Colonel Mackenzie. Realising that the trenches are too crowded for him to make it to Mackenzie in time, Schofield sprints across the battlefield, just as the infantry begin their charge into the German bombardment. He forces his way into meeting Mackenzie, who reads the letter and reluctantly calls off the attack. Schofield is told that Joseph was among the first wave, and searches for him among the wounded, finding him unscathed. Joseph is upset to hear of his brother's death, but thanks Schofield for his efforts. Schofield gives Joseph his brother's rings and dog tag, and asks to write to their mother about Blake's heroics, to which Joseph agrees. Schofield then sits under a nearby tree, looking at photographs of his two young daughters and his wife. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] Development and casting [ edit] Amblin Partners and New Republic Pictures were announced to have acquired the project in June 2018, with Sam Mendes directing, and co-writing the screenplay alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns. [7] Tom Holland was reported to be in talks for the film in September 2018, though ultimately was not involved, 8] and in October, Roger Deakins was set to reunite with Mendes as cinematographer. [9] George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman entered negotiations to star the same month. [10] Thomas Newman was hired to compose the score in March 2019. [11] The same month, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Jamie Parker, Nabhaan Rizwan, and Claire Duburcq joined the cast in supporting roles. [12] Writing [ edit] In August 2019, Mendes stated, It's the story of a messenger who has a message to carry. And that's all I can say. It lodged with me as a child, this story or this fragment and obviously I've enlarged it significantly. But it has that at its core. 13] In Time in 2020, Mendes stated that the writing involved some risk-taking: I took a calculated gamble, and I'm pleased I did because of the energy you get just from driving forward (in the narrative) in a war that was fundamentally about paralysis and stasis. The ideas for a script, which Mendes wrote with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, came from the story that Mendes's grandfather, Alfred Mendes, a native of Trinidad who was a messenger for the British on the Western Front, had told him. [14] Filming [ edit] Roger Deakins was cinematographer for the film, reuniting with Mendes for their fourth collaboration, having first worked together on Jarhead in 2005. [14] Filming was accomplished with long takes and elaborately choreographed moving camera shots to give the effect of one continuous take. [15] 16] Time reported, The camera stays with the two lance corporals from the film's first frame to its last, as if unfolding in one long take, much like the technique used by Alejandro González Iñárritu in his 2015 Best Picture winner Birdman. The aim is to immerse the viewer in a propulsive, at times headlong journey that travels like a lit fuse. 17] Filming began on 1 April 2019 and continued through June 2019 in Wiltshire, Hankley Common in Surrey and Govan, Scotland, as well as at Shepperton Studios. [18] 19] 20] 21] Concern was raised over the planned filming on Salisbury Plain by conservationists who felt the production could disturb potentially undiscovered remains, requesting a survey before any set construction began. [22] 23] Some shots required the use of as many as 500 background extras. [2] Sections of the film were also shot near Low Force, on the River Tees, Teesdale in June 2019. The production staff had to install signs warning walkers in the area not to be alarmed at the prosthetic bodies strewn around the site. [24] Release [ edit] The film premiered on 4 December 2019 at the 2019 Royal Film Performance. [25] The film began a limited release in the United States and Canada on 25 December 2019 in eleven venues. This made it eligible for 2020 awards, including the 77th Golden Globes, held on 5 January 2020, where the film won both the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Motion Picture and Best Director for Mendes. Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] As of 2 February 2020, 1917 has grossed 119. 2 million in the United States and Canada and 129. 8 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of 249 million. [4] 5] In the US, the film made 251, 000 from 11 venues on its first day of limited release. [26] It went on to have a limited opening weekend of 570, 000, and a five-day gross of 1 million, for an average of 91, 636 per-venue. [27] The film would go on to make a total of 2. 7 million over its 15 days of limited release. It then expanded wide on 10 January, making 14 million on its first day, including 3. 25 million from Thursday night previews. It went on to gross 36. 5 million for the weekend (beating the original projections of 25 million) becoming the first film to dethrone Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker at the box office. [28] In its second weekend of wide release the film made 22 million (and 26. 8 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday) finishing second behind newcomer Bad Boys for Life. [29] It then made 15. 8 million the following weekend, remaining in second. [30] Critical response [ edit] On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 89% based on 388 reviews, with an average rating of 8. 4/10. The site's critics consensus reads, Hard-hitting, immersive, and an impressive technical achievement, 1917 captures the trench warfare of World War I with raw, startling immediacy. 31] Metacritic assigned the film a weighted average score of 78 out of 100 based on 57 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews. 32] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A−" on an A+ to F scale, and PostTrak reported it received an average 4. 5 out of 5 from viewers, with 69% of people saying they would definitely recommend it. [28] Several critics named the film among the best of 2019, including Kate Erbland of IndieWire [33] and Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter. [34] Karl Vick, writing for Time magazine, found the film to stand up favourably when compared to Stanley Kubrick 's WWI film Paths of Glory, stating, motion pictures do require a certain amount of motion, and the major accomplishment of 1917, the latest film to join the canon, maybe that its makers figured out what the generals could not: a way to advance. 35] Rubin Safaya of described the movie as "A visceral experience and visual masterclass. 36] Writing for the Hindustan Times, Rohan Naahar stated, I can only imagine the effect 1917 will have on audiences that aren't familiar with the techniques Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins are about to unleash upon them. 37] In his review for NPR, Justin Chang was less positive. He agreed the film was a "mind-boggling technical achievement" but did not think it was that spectacular overall, as Mendess style with its impression of a continuous take “can be as distracting as it is immersive. ” [38] Of the long takes, Manohla Dargis of The New York Times opined that "such demonstrative self-reflexivity might have been deployed to productive effect; here, it registers as grandstanding. 39] Richard Brody of The New Yorker stated that, far from intensifying the experience of war, they] trivialize it; the effect isnt one of artistic imagination expanded by technique but of convention showily tweaked. 40] Top ten lists [ edit] 1917 appeared on many critics' year-end top-ten lists: 41] 1st – Sam Allard, Cleveland Scene [42] 1st – Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post [43] 1st – Tim Miller, Cape Cod Times [44] 1st – Lawrence Toppman, The Charlotte Observer [45] 1st – Mal Vincent, The Virginian-Pilot [46] 1st – Sandy Kenyon, WABC-TV [47] 2nd – Randy Myers, The Mercury News [48] 3rd – Matt Goldberg, Collider [49] 3rd – Jason Rantz, KTTH [50] 3rd – Mara Reinstein, Us Weekly [51] 3rd – Chuck Yarborough, Cleveland Plain Dealer [52] 4th – Lindsey Bahr, Associated Press [53] 4th – Benjamin Lee, The Guardian [54] 4th – Brian Truitt, USA Today [55] 5th – Staff consensus, Consequence of Sound [56] 5th – Bruce Miller, Sioux City Journal [57] 6th – Cary Darling, Houston Chronicle [58] 6th – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone [59] 6th – Ethan Alter, Marcus Errico and Kevin Polowy, Yahoo! Alfred Hitchcocks “Rope” was the first film to experiment with the single-take technique Last Updated: December 23, 2019 @ 8:34 PM Filming a long, extended take in a movie is one of the best ways to win some acclaim and show off a bit of your directorial prowess. But it's often so complex and so ambitious that only a handful of directors have ever dared make their movie to appear as though it was filmed in one continuous, unbroken shot. Sam Mendes is the latest to attempt the feat for his World War I epic "1917. and boy did he nail it. Here are some other films that helped pave the way for him. Warner Bros. "Rope" 1948) The master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock was the first to attempt a single-take feature film, taking on a radical experiment with a big budget and A-list stars that included James Stewart. His movie "Rope" was inspired by a play by Patrick Hamilton and concerned a pair of men who murdered someone, hid his body in a large wooden trunk and then hosted a dinner party with the trunk as the centerpiece, all to prove they could commit the perfect murder. Hitchcock believed that if time passed between cuts, the suspense of whether the body was still in the trunk would be lost. The director actually orchestrated an elaborate ballet with his camera and actors and filmed the movie as though it were a play. But due to the technological time constraints of the time, he wrote the screenplay in 10-minute chunks and loaded his camera with the largest film canisters available, then placing the invisible cuts as the camera moved behind a chair or a table. "Macbeth" 1982) No discussion of unbroken takes would be complete without mentioning the Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr, who established himself as a master of the punishing long shot with his TV movie adaptation of "Macbeth" in 1982. Though it actually has two shots, the first is just five minutes long, and the remaining 57 minutes told in a single shot would be the basis for his future films "Satantango. Werckmeister Harmonies" and "The Turn Horse. " Screen Gems "Timecode" 2000) For his experimental film "Timecode. director Mike Figgis incorporated four, lightweight digital cameras each shooting in real time, then played all four shots, each 93-minutes in length, simultaneously in the four quadrants of the screen. The audio would be mixed down so you could hear the dialogue in a given quadrant when you needed to, and sometimes multiple cameras would see the same actor at once but from different points of view. It in effect proved that digital cinematography could accomplish as much, if not more, than could be done with film. Wellspring Media "Russian Ark" 2002) While other filmmakers hid their cuts between invisible edits and other trickery, director Alexander Sokurov actually filmed "Russian Ark" in one continuous take. His 96-minute long film boasted 2000 actors on-screen alongside three live orchestras as they all traversed the massive Winter Palace of the Russian state Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, telling a story of Russian history spread across 300 years. Open Road Films "La Casa Muda" 2010) and "Silent House" 2012) Both the Uruguayan film "La Casa Muda" and its American remake "Silent House" starring Elizabeth Olsen claim to have been filmed in a single, unbroken take to capture the real-time effect of a woman venturing through a haunted house, with the story supposedly based on real events. However, it's suspected that both films actually have cuts, as the original was shot on a shoestring budget with a digital camera that could only film for a maximum of 15 minutes at a time. Iranian Independents "Fish & Cat" 2013) The Iranian film "Fish & Cat" from director Shahram Mohri starts off following one man carrying a mysterious bag that's slowly turned bloody, but the camera then starts following new people each with their own perspective on the reality we're seeing, as though the actors were passing a virtual baton between one another. Fox Searchlight "Birdman" 2014) Alejandro Iñárritu's Best Picture winner made a career resurgence for Michael Keaton, it won cinematographer Emmanuel Lubeski another Oscar, and it told an ambitious satire of an actor trying to escape his movie star past in the face of an encroaching industry and other outside pressures. The director said in an interview that we live our lives as though through Steadicam, without editing, and it was necessary for the audience to do the same with this character. "I wanted this character to be submerged in that inescapable reality, and the audience has to live these desperate three days alongside him. Iñárritu told Variety. Adopt Films "Victoria" 2015) German director Sebastian Schipper filmed the 140-minute "Victoria" not just in one shot but only across a handful of takes, choosing the best run through that became the final film. Sony Pictures Classics "Son of Saul" 2015) László Nemes' intense Holocaust drama clings to the back of its lead character's head, making him visible in almost every moment of the 107-minute long film as he witnesses the horrors of a German concentration camp. The film follows a member of the Sonderkommando, a Jewish prisoner held at the death camps who was forced to aid in the gassing of other prisoners for fear of his own life. Nordisk Film "Utøya: July 22" 2018) Director Erik Poppe told the story of a Norwegian terrorist attack by staging it in real time, though using fictional characters, and filming it as though it were done in a single take across 90 minutes. Poppe's film was released the same year as Paul Greengrass made his own movie, 22 July. about the same terrorist incident. Courtesy of TIFF "Blind Spot" 2018) Norwegian actress Tuva Novotny made the film "Blind Spot" her directorial debut, telling the story of a mother and father's life upended by tragedy in a single shot. Universal Pictures "1917" 2019) Cinematographer Roger Deakins told TheWrap that though "1917" is just conceived as a single take and has some invisible cuts, you'd never know where they are. Because Sam Mendes' war epic never stays put in the same location and traverses incredible ground, almost all of it outdoors, the team had to carefully choreograph every moment in terms of how actors, crew and the camera would move, and they had to do much of it without the aid of Steadicam as seen in most other one-shot movies.

I loved this movie. The film follows a standard four-act narrative structure. Each act has only one shot, which, as you can imagine, is an extremely long take. The cinematographers and production designers must have done some impossible work.
Under this immersive and atmospheric setup, you see what the protagonists saw, hear what the protagonists heard, and feel what the protagonists felt. This is one of the most realistic, intense and hard-hitting thrillers I've ever seen. That's why I don't recommend this movie. You will be traumatized by the film, even long after you finish watching it.

Free Movie 1997. Questioning the Story: To what extent is 1917 based on a true story? Though much of the World War I movie 1917 is fiction, it is loosely based on an account that director Sam Mendes' paternal grandfather, Alfred Mendes, told to him when he was a boy. Mendes described his grandfather's story during a Variety podcast, stating, I had a story that was a fragment told to me by my grandfather, who fought in the First World War. It's the story of a messenger who has a message to carry. And that's all I can say. It lodged with me as a child, this story or this fragment, and obviously I've enlarged it and changed it significantly. But it has that at its core. It turns out Mendes' grandfather was the messenger in question.  -The Times Born on the Caribbean Island of Trinidad, Mendes' grandfather, Alfred, left for England in 1915 and joined the British Army, enlisting in January 1916 at age 19. After serving with the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade, he was sent to Oisemont, not far from Dieppe, France, where he trained to be a signaller. He was then sent to the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium. On October 12, 1917, hundreds of British soldiers, including Alfred Mendes, were tasked with reclaiming the village of Poelcappelle, which is close to the Passchendaele Ridge and had been overtaken by the Germans. British soldiers attacked in the pouring rain and suffered significant losses. 158 of the 484 men in Alfred's battalion were killed, wounded, or unaccounted for. The missing men were scattered across miles of water-filled shell craters in the mud-soaked No Man's Land, unable to communicate their positions. Sam Mendes' Grandfather Alfred's story planted the seed for the movie, which was developed into a script that is mostly fictional. Mendes co-wrote the script with Scottish screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns. When Alfred's commanding officer asked for a runner to locate the positions of the surviving men and report back, Alfred volunteered for the dangerous mission. In his memoirs, titled Autobiography of Alfred H Mendes 1897-1991, he wrote of taking the assignment, I had done a signalling course and although it bore little relationship to the job at hand, I felt myself under an obligation to the battalion. I volunteered. Alfred located numerous survivors, which enabled them to be rescued. Of the harrowing mission, he wrote, In spite of the snipers, the machine-gunners and the shells, I arrived back at C Company's shell hole without a scratch but with a series of hair-raising experiences that would keep my grand and great-grandchildren enthralled for nights on end. As a result of his fearless actions, Alfred Mendes was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. While Alfred Mendes' true story helped to give birth to his grandson's idea for the 1917 movie, whose official synopsis reads, In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers. it seems that much of the film's story has been imagined. Even Alfred running into No Man's Land to locate survivors has in the movie become two men, Blake and Schofield, running across No Man's Land to warn hundreds of soldiers that they're about to head into a trap. Are the two main characters, Blake and Schofield, based on real people? No. The 1917 true story reveals that, at best, Dean-Charles Chapman's character, Blake, was very loosely inspired by Sam Mendes' grandfather, Alfred Mendes. Blake's friend in the film, Schofield (George MacKay) also perhaps loosely represents Alfred's experience during the war, but neither character is directly based on Alfred Mendes. In the 1917 movie, the pair are given the mission of crossing deep into enemy territory to get a message to 1, 500 soldiers who are unknowingly headed into a deadly trap, including Blake's own brother (portrayed by Richard Madden. The WWI experiences of Sam Mendes' grandfather, Alfred Mendes (left) helped to inspire the experiences of Dean-Charles Chapman's character, Blake (right) in the 1917 movie. Was Sam Mendes' grandfather injured during World War I? Yes. Director Sam Mendes' grandfather, whose true story inspired the idea for the movie, was injured in May 1918 when he accidentally inhaled poisonous gas used by the German army during their attack at La Bassee Canal near Béthune, France. Alfred Mendes was sent back to Britain, where he recovered at a hospital in Sheffield. Following the war, he returned to Trinidad and was employed in his wealthy father's provisions business, writing poetry and fiction on the side. In 1933, he headed to New York City where he joined literary salons and became acquainted with American writers like William Faulkner, Thomas Wolfe and William Saroyan. He returned to Trinidad in 1940, giving up writing to become a civil servant. He worked as General Manager of the Port Services Department. He was married three times; he was widowed when his first wife died of pneumonia, his second marriage ended in divorce in 1938, and he married his third wife, Ellen Parachini, in 1940 while still in New York. The marriage lasted until they both died in 1991 of natural causes while living in Barbados. Are the characters portrayed by Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch based on real people? No, we've found no evidence that they represent real people. The supporting characters in the 1917 movie, including the commanding officer portrayed by Colin Firth and the characters portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden and Mark Strong, all appear to be fictional. Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Firth's 1917 movie characters are fictional. Are the battles depicted in 1917 based on real-life WWI battles that Sam Mendes' grandfather fought in? The movie opens just after the German army purposely fell back to the Hindenburg Line, which was shorter and easier to defend. This real-life strategic withdrawal was known as Operation Alberich. In the mostly fictional movie, the Second Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment mistakenly believes that the Germans are in retreat. The battalion is preparing to attack without knowing that the Germans are waiting to overwhelm them. With the lines of communication cut, two British soldiers are tasked with hand-delivering a message to call off the attack. The fighting in the movie was inspired by (but unfolds prior to) the Battle of Passchendaele, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, which took place from July 31, 1917 to November 10, 1917. Both the British and the Germans suffered heavy casualties. In the end, the battle resulted in the German army being pinned to Flanders and suffering unsustainable casualties. As stated earlier, Alfred Mendes fought in the battle, and his battalion suffered heavy losses while trying to take the village of Poelcappelle from the Germans. 1917 movie streaming free. Great job editing this video, reasons like this give me a small reminder how difficult it can be to make something that takes so long to make for only 11 minutes. This was an excellent piece of cinematography. Youre with both characters the entire way and constantly know whats happening to them.

This movie easily jumped to my all time favorite movie. Phenomenal job on the cinematography, acting, the history, and the feeling you get while watching. It was absolutely well done and deserves some awards. This film is an immersive and wholly impactful experience showing viewers just how visceral and hellish it was to be in combat during World War I. Directed by Sam Mendes and stunningly shot by cinematographer Roger Deakins, this film tells the story of two young British soldiers who are given orders by their superior to deliver a message to prevent an attack in a seemingly distant area of France. The film is (mostly) shot and tightly edited to appear akin to one continuous shot that grabs the viewer's attention and never lets go.
The intensity of the film is almost heart-stoppingly powerful. Viewers really feel the tension and anguish that countless young men were forced into during the war. The use of tracking shots and differentiating scope and scale further make the film's war action seem even more impactful. Its production design is outstanding, with unbelievably detailed recreations of various landscapes of the Western Front. Two the surprise of no one, Deakins' cinematography is remarkable both in its ambition and its execution. The film is incredibly well-acted, and also manages to develop its characters well, almost placing their current states of being into a figurative tapestry summing up the film's primary messages and intended takeaways about the war in the exact moment in which it is set. All of the film's scenes and major setpiece moments are superbly edited not only to look like one take, but to establish stunning tightness and cohesion to the narrative.
While the film is undoubtedly great, it's not quite perfect because it could have used some contextualization about what exactly was going on in the war during this exact time in 1917. Even though I'm a history buff to some extent and knew the basics of that, I would have appreciated some more specific information. It would have been possible to do this without breaking the film's "one-shot" style, as such context could have been revealed through dialogue or visually. This is the main reason that, while a very strong achievement without question, this film does not quite rise to the level of Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk, another visually immersive representation of a short time frame in a terrible 20th-century war. The time span of the film seems very slightly contrived as well.
That said, this is probably the most unique and detailed portrait of World War I since "All Quiet on the Western Front, and I absolutely recommend it. 8/10
NOTE: I saw an advance screening of the film in RPX (Regal's premium large format.) While the picture and sound quality were good, I still feel that RPX is inferior to Dolby Cinema and IMAX.

Seen this film twice now, hoping to go for a 3rd time, soundtrack was just mind blowing & the film was an emotional roller coaster, best War film since Saving Private Ryan. Free movies 1917. Nice to see they dont anachronistically made the actors hold their rifles in low/high ready etc showed in so many ww2.ww1 period pieces but they actually maintain the somewhat sloppy (to us) citizen soldiers firering stances and ways to hold their rilfes wich was the way they kept their weapons up to Vietnam at least.

So at 22:45 a trailer for a Netflix series comes on

1917 full movie free online. Finally. great movie to erase the thoughts of Sonic and Cats. Easily the Best Picture I've seen this past year - and it wasn't easy. Until this week it was at only two theaters in NYC, so you had to make an effort; it was worth it.
After a little time to set the scene, the picture picks up steam and proceeds at break-neck speed to it's climactic ending. It starts right after Cpl. Blake gets his orders; go behind enemy lines and warn his brother's unit that they are walking into a trap, the hook being that Blake would try hard to succeed since his brother was at stake. From this point on it's like a roller coaster ride with no let up. I was exhausted at the end after the ordeal of the story. It's a war picture but it's also a story of survival, like "The Revenant.
AA Noms could go to George McKay, who i'd never seen before, for Best Actor and for whoever designed the sets - they were perfect as well as authentic. It is a British production which is fitting as Hollywood produces nothing of consequence anymore.

That movie became really emotional to me and my dad. To us we liked it. It's a very good movie.
